Berrien County NonProfit Collaborative
Working in the nonprofit sector, resources are always
scarce. This has been especially true as we come out of this latest economic
crisis. Our donors also expect us to use their gifts wisely by keeping our
administrative costs at reasonable levels. Our communities expect us to provide
the best quality services/programs at affordable costs as well.
The Coalition of Community Funders (i.e., Berrien Community
Foundation, United Way of SW MI, Frederick S. Upton Foundation, and Whirlpool
Foundation), after being approached by several nonprofits with this concept, is
facilitating how 501(c)(3)s in Berrien County might collaborate to gain leverage
with vendors for various services and to share best practices around purchasing.
The Berrien County NonProfit Collaborative (BCNPC) Steering
Committee was formed with the goal of being cross representative of nonprofits
in Berrien County. The Berrien Community Foundation is representing the
Coalition of Community Funders members on the Committee and is acting as the
overall neutral facilitator. Steering Committee Nonprofit Organizations
include the Area Agency on Aging (Region IV), Berrien Community Foundation, Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Berrien & Cass, Inc., Child & Family Services,
Cornerstone, Curious Kids’ Museum, Gateway, Hospice at Home, Michigan Works!,
Senior Nutrition Services, and the Volunteer Center.
As a first step in what we hope to be productive
collaborations with the goals above, the Steering Committee has developed two
documents to share with nonprofits in Berrien County. The first is a suggested
vendor criteria list for use when engaging a vendor. The second is a
suggested vendor list and helpful links. We have also shared a recent document
of the economic impact of nonprofits in Michigan provided by the Michigan NonProfit Association.
These are living documents. Nonprofit organizations are
encouraged to email any additions,
suggestions, etc. to BCNPC
