In a demonstration of its commitment to removing barriers to education, Berrien Community Foundation is stepping up to support students at Lake Michigan College (LMC) with a $50,000 contribution to establish an emergency book fund for the 2025-26 academic year.
The initiative, driven by BCF’s mission to strengthen the community through strategic philanthropy, is designed to help students facing financial hardship access the textbooks and materials they need to succeed in college. The fund will provide relief to students who might otherwise struggle to afford essential course materials.
“With the help of generous donors who are dedicated to removing barriers to student success, we are able to work with Lake Michigan College to help financially struggling students with books and materials they need,” said Lisa Cripps-Downey, President of the Berrien Community Foundation. “At BCF, we are always looking for ways to help our community. Partnering with LMC to prepare our residents for success in the workforce is a wonderful way to help.”
The Foundation’s contribution is more than just a financial gift — it’s a strategic investment in the future of Berrien County. By ensuring students have access to the tools they need from day one, BCF is helping to improve academic outcomes and long-term career success for local residents.
Doug Schaffer, Vice President of Community Impact at LMC, emphasized the importance of the Foundation’s support.
“Research shows that students who have materials early on in their academic journey have higher completion rates and do better in class,” he said. “We appreciate the efforts of the Berrien Community Foundation for this gift and their support of LMC students through the years. We are fortunate to live in an area that supports the important work this Foundation does every day.”
