Berrien Community Foundation (BCF) is now accepting applications for grants up to $10,000 from the William J. Deputy Endowment Fund. The grants support projects that strengthen communities throughout Harbor Country. The deadline to apply is October 1, 2026.
“Bill Deputy loved Harbor Country,” said Lisa Cripps-Downey, BCF president. “He was a generous community leader. One part of the legacy he left was this endowment that allows Berrien Community Foundation to support grants for projects that make life better in Harbor Country.”
One of the recent recipients of the grant was the Weesaw Township Fire Department, who used the funds to replace outdated, decades-old rescue equipment with new battery-operated tools, helping firefighters respond with more modern and efficient equipment.
“We work closely with our Harbor Country neighbors, and they know where grant dollars can have the greatest impact,” said Susan Matheny, BCF program director. “The Deputy Endowment Fund gives us an opportunity to respond to those priorities and support meaningful projects – whether that means replacing critical equipment, improving public spaces or addressing another important community need.”
Municipalities are encouraged, but not required, to partner with other nonprofit organizations to complete proposed projects. Eligible municipalities include Bridgman, Grand Beach, Harbert, Lakeside, Michiana, New Buffalo, New Troy, Sawyer, Three Oaks and Union Pier.
